Davao City, like most cities in the Philippines, tends to change quickly. Not only has the speed of the 21st century hit the biggest city on the island of Mindanao, but that very speed often gets caught up in a ‘speed trap,’ so to say.
The dubious ‘speed trap’ of Davao is determining what exactly the people of Davao like to eat, and what cultural aspects are pleasing to an ever changing lifestyle. That very change has altered the landscape of Davao in recent years, and like most things in life, one of the few things anyone can stop, is simply time itself.
Matina Town Square has gone on a total revamp as of just over a year ago.
Today, the MTS complex looks nothing like it did years ago and as we speak; the place is going through a transformation like nothing else to hit Davao City. Those that are part of this transformation are just a piece of a new landscape that puts Davao in-line with the rest of this deeply embedded and highly artistic country.
I visited one place in particular just recently and might I say, “It’s a Step Above Anywhere Else.”
The Stairwell is a new, modern aged themed restaurant located within the MTS complex. The restaurant is owned by a mother-daughter team and has been lovingly created in an ‘Industrial’ style with a true ambiance like no other in Davao.
Not only is the exterior pleasing, but the interior is set with Danish Mid-Century Modern tables and chairs that bring a look to the Industrial style to an all time high. The 2nd floor has a pleasing large room and the outer rim has seating to enjoy your time, while overlooking the center-court of MTS.
The menu for the resto is very pleasing, though I found out later it is a ‘soft opening’ menu and will be re-vamped in the near future. Many of the dishes I sampled are being carried over into the new one, including the Lasagna, Signature Spare-Ribs, Chicken Pepper-Steak and Twice-Baked Oriental Chicken, just to name a few.
Not only is the menu fitting to the region, it envelopes itself around tastes and favorites of expats and foreigners visiting Davao on business and vacation. Items from, Mushroom & Chowder Soups, to main courses that cover unlimited potential to appease anyone looking for a good night out.
Those visiting “The Stairwell” might be surprised by one thing, the price. Not only are the ingredients collected locally, but the prices to prepare and serve them are kept at a pleasing level for every budget out there. Menu items start at just under 100 peso and the current ‘soft opening’ menu displays items that reach only in the 600 peso range at the top-end.
Not only is the food very pleasing to me, but the wine and beer list is an added crowd pleaser too. Wine ranges are very generous and the selection is well kept. Everyone that enjoys something unique and upscale to their dinner menu, is bound to find what they are looking for at The Stairwell.
For those drinking the local beers and looking for a place to hang-out, the curbs are full to the brim with seating to sit and enjoy the cold San-Mig favorites starting at just 45 peso each.
For those who only drink the best, Smirnoff, Bacardi and Johnny Walker Black are just a few of the ‘top shelf’ selections.
For anyone thinking of stopping into The Stairwell on their next visit to Matina Town Square, I’ve listed just a snippet of the menu selections that by far were appeasing and delicious:
- New York Style Buffalo Wings ~ 158 php
- Nachos Supreme ~ 198 php
- Salisbury Steak ~ 108 & 158 php
- Crispy Free-Range Quail ~ 238 php
- Twice-Backed Oriental Chicken ~ 258 php
- Chicken Pepper-Steak ~ 258 php
- Signature Spare-Ribs ~ 348 half/598 full
Since my initial visit, I have once again returned to enjoy the food and drinks at The Stairwell. Not only did my meal come with a kick, but my friend’s meal was missing a piece or two from my dubious fork running across the table.
For my expat friends and family, as well as the numerous others that read this column, be sure to do you and your friends a favor, stop in at The Stairwell and climb your way through a multitude of unique menu features that are bound to please the pickiest of appetites.
The Stairwell – the new place that is putting MTS and Davao on the map to a level it has never seen before.
I’d like to thank Kat Mascardo and The Stairwell team for my visit to the Davao Blogger event as well as Karla Stefan Singson for her entrusted friendship and invitation to this unique event. Not only is my participation into promoting the city of Davao, it is my honor to bring to light those that have gone far and beyond to bring a new business to the people of this great country.
