NEW YORK, New York – A wax and resin statue of Hitler on his knees was sold at Christie’s auction house sold for a record price by the artist, hammering at $17.2 million.
Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan made the kneeling Hitler statue in 2001 – the previous record for the artist was $7.9 million.
Christi’s gave a pre-auction sale estimate at $10 to $15 million.
The statue depicted Hitler being the size of a boy, on his knees in a gray woolen suit, with his hands clasped together as he gazed upward.
Maurizio Cattelan is a living artist, this sale is an auction record for any work of art by him – he currently resides in Italy at the age of 55.
